Sarah’s broad knowledge of American poetry was the foundation of our class. Her reading assignments represented various eras and schools of poetry and prompted me to think about several ways of writing. Our in-class discussions were lively and often brought out illuminating comparisons between the poets we’d read. Sarah could always point out the particular diction, rhythm, and tone of a poem and show how they worked together to draw in the reader. Each of her homework assignments called for thinking in a different way than before, which was not only interesting, but kept my creativity active. I looked forward to each session, which was always fun and stimulating.
